Incidents of tongue cancer have reached an all-time high in the last 10 years. Oral cancer now supersedes cervical cancer and melanoma on the annual cancer death charts. Nearly 40,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year, half of whom will live a maximum of 5 additional years. Profs. Marilena Vered and Dan Dayan and their team study exosomes – nanoparticles in the saliva that change size, shape and elasticity as a mouth goes from healthy to diseased. Their goal: detecting oral cancer with simple, purchasable saliva testing kit.
